Celebrating Under the Interstate

I painted this in April from a memory of years ago when I got lost in Gary Indiana while trying to get from Des Moines Iowa to Grand Rapids Michigan. In contrast to the dirty, polluted, interstate highway, where people pass from east to west and back, giving off constant exhaust; here were the colorful people of Gary, having a street carnival amidst the concrete and blacktop. If you haven’t learned about Gary Indiana, I urge you to do it. White Shame.
